Our theological framework

A commitment to biblical soundness

Discern exists because families deserve a clear-eyed account of what a story believes before it enters the home. That work is only worth doing if it is anchored somewhere firmer than taste or trend. These are the convictions that govern how we analyse, what we praise and what we warn against.

01

Scripture is our final authority

Every judgement in Discern is measured against the Bible, not against the mood of the moment. We read Scripture as God-breathed, sufficient for faith and practice, and clear enough on the matters that shape how a family should watch, read and play. Where the Bible speaks plainly we say so; where it is silent we say that too, rather than borrowing authority we do not have.

02

We stand within historic orthodoxy

Discern is not a new movement with new revelation. We confess the Apostles’ and Nicene creeds, the full deity and humanity of Christ, his bodily resurrection, and the reality of sin, judgement and grace. Across denominational lines we hold those things as first-order; questions of church polity, baptism and eschatology we treat as second-order matters on which believing readers may differ.

03

We name worldview without caricature

A story carries a vision of what is real, good and worth living for, whether or not its makers intend it. We describe that vision fairly, in its own terms, before we evaluate it. Naturalism, moral relativism, pantheism, nihilism and Christian theism are not slogans to us; each gets a careful account of its claims and its consequences for the viewer.

04

We look for grace before we list faults

Redemptive themes are not decorative. Every honest story borrows from the Christian imagination: sacrifice, mercy, justice, longing for a home that lasts. We trace those echoes as evidence of common grace, then ask the harder question of whether a story points to the Redeemer or settles for a counterfeit consolation.

05

Caution without fear, conviction without cruelty

We describe content plainly so parents can decide, not to manufacture alarm. We will name blasphemy, sexual content, graphic violence and occult practice for what they are, and we will do it without contempt for the people who made the work or the readers who enjoy it. Discernment is a discipline of love, and love does not exaggerate.

06

The tool serves the reader, never the reverse

Our analysis is AI-assisted and always labelled as such. Machine output is a starting point for your own reflection, weighed against Scripture, prayer and the counsel of your church. We claim no pastoral authority, and we would rather you close the page and open your Bible than treat a summary as a verdict.

Test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.

Where we may be wrong

Careful readers will sometimes disagree with us, and they should feel free to say so in the reviews. If an analysis mishandles Scripture, misrepresents a story or overstates a caution, tell us and we will correct it. Soundness is not a claim we make about ourselves once; it is a discipline we owe you every week.

An eye for truth in every story; a voice of wisdom against every deception.
